Jan Dolski is the protagonist of The Alters. He is voiced by Alex Jordan.
Biography[]
Jan grew up in a mining town, with his mom working in a local grocery store and his father in a mine. However, his father was also a known drunk and would take it out on his family, making Jan dream of running away and never looking back. One day, when Jan was 15, he saw a fight break out and one of the boys cried out to Jan for help. Instead of getting involved though, Jan left the scene.
Still ever focused on getting out, Jan tried to study for his secondary school's exams, though family life was still difficult. Not only was his dad still abusive and yelling constantly, but Jan could also tell something was wrong with his mother, who seemed to be getting weaker. With this on his mind, Jan tried to apply for colleges nearby as well so he could still get a college degree and visit his mom regularly, but unfortunately he only got into one college that was hundreds of miles away.
At 19 years old, Jan decided he couldn't break the promise he made to himself years ago that he'd take the chance to leave if he ever got it. With that, he left to attend the only college he got into, promising he'd still try to visit his mom semi-regularly. However, by the time he was 21, he ended up going months at a time between visits, reasoning it wasn't worth a day of travel just to see his mom for a couple hours before she went to bed early. Instead, he opted to stay at college and attend post-exam parties with his friends.
Early adulthood[]
A year later, he received a seasonal job offer abroad for two months, which could pay not only enough for another semester but still have money left that he could send to his mom for her treatments. However, within another year, his mother's health took a turn for the worse and she lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital, now too late for him to tell her goodbye. Shortly after, she passed away.
Guilt ridden by the thoughts of whether or not he should have stayed instead of going to college, Jan soon shoved this aside and decided to focus on his studies and get a good job, believing his mom would have wanted him to continue on.
By the time he was 24, Jan met up with Lena Berg and, while they were only meant to meet up to work on a project, it was soon clear the two had a mutual attraction. Within the year, Lena moved in with Jan. Soon after, at 25 years old, Jan got his degree and even an offer to go for a PhD. However, he was torn between that or making a good salary now to provide for him and Lena. After a year, he decided the money was better and decided to take up a private company's job offer.
While he found the routine monotonous and annoying, after two years he and Lena were able to buy a home at 28 years old, who had gotten married at one point. However, 2 years later, the stock exchange crashed and Jan was laid off as his company was affected. Having no other options at the time, Jan took a job as a taxi driver, though sometimes it meant working during the holidays.
Later adulthood[]
With Jan still between jobs, a year later Lena was offered a wonderful job opportunity, but in a foreign country. Despite this, Lena was really excited about the prospect, but Jan not so much, seeing it as him having to start all over again if they moved. Eventually, he convinced Lena to stay, and tried to convince himself it was the sensible choice and maybe he could find a second job to offer a better life where they lived currently. However, their relationship began to sour, as bills stacked up and Jan took to drinking before going to bed after long work hours. By the time he was 33, Lena had enough and left, taking a job at Ally Corp while Jan continued to drink away his sorrows.
Around the time he turned 34, Jan was growing restless, wanting a change but not finding anything that stuck. Meanwhile, Ally Corp had been posting up ads looking for eager recruits to join on their special "Project Dolly" mission, of which Rapidium was needed. Finally resolved to try it out, Jan signed up and a year later, at 35 years old, went into space and away from all the problems he'd been facing with his life. However, he'd end up facing a life-changing situation he never expected.
After crash landing to an unnamed planet, Jan ends up as the sole survivor, thus having to make himself adapt through his situation by creating the Alters, which are alternate versionf of himself that are specialized in different jobs and fields.
